Highlanders and All Blacks wing Hosea Gear has signed a deal to join French Top 14 club Toulouse at the end of the Super Rugby season.

TouIouse reported the deal on their club website, announcing that Gear, capped 14 times by New Zealand, had been signed on a "medical joker" after France international Vincent Clerc suffered a serious knee injury in April.

Gear, who has scored four tries for the Highlanders this season, was named recently in an All Blacks training squad ahead of the three Tests against France in June.

Gear is unsure if the deal will rule him out of contention for the squad to play three home Tests against France in June, but he has flexibility in the Toulouse contract to return home after one year - meaning he could still be in contention to play for New Zealand at Rugby World Cup 2015.

Former All Blacks inside back Luke McAlister is also at Toulouse, who finished third in the Top 14 league this season and lost their semi-final against Toulon.
