A drama depicting Stephen Donald's role in New Zealand's long-awaited Rugby World Cup triumph in 2011 is coming to a small screen near you.

The New Zealand Herald reports that Great Southern Television has been granted NZ$2.7m (£1.4m) of tax payers money to produce a two-hour drama entitled The Kick.

Donald, whose nickname is Beaver, is set to take a central role having been thrust into the limelight in the final following injuries to first-choice No.10 Dan Carter and then another to his deputy Aaron Cruden during the final.

Donald stepped into the playmaker role midway through the first half and would slot what would prove to be the match-winning penalty shortly after the re-start with the All Blacks going on to claim a narrow 8-7 victory.

The Kick, written by Tom Scott, will follow Donald's life and rugby career while also examining New Zealand's rugby psyche, producer Phillip Smith told the newspaper. "The kick is really just part of the story - it's a much bigger story.

"It's a story about how a man found himself very much offside with a nation, how we turned on someone very much in the tall-poppy-syndrome manner and how he redeemed himself."
