Beauden Barrett has ruled out a move to the Blues, clearing the way for rugby league playmaker Benji Marshall to complete a move that has been signposted over the past week.

Barrett had been considering a move from Wellington to play alongside his brother Kane Barrett in Auckland, but Blues coach Sir John Kirwan says talks have ended.

"For reasons of loyalty, Beauden has told us he will be staying with the Hurricanes," Kirwan told The New Zealand Herald. "It would have been great to have him here, but I understand his reasons."

Marshall is reported to have agreed verbally to join the Auckland Super Rugby franchise on a two-year contract said to be worth $NZ500,000 ($A444,500) per season. The Blues are reported to be set to make an announcement on Saturday, a day after Marshall and his Wests Tigers team play Parramatta Eels in a National Rugby League match in Sydney.
