Aaron Cruden is likely to start for New Zealand against Argentina in The Rugby Championship Test in La Plata on Saturday, having overcome his knee injury, but Beauden Barrett can also expect plenty of game time from the replacements bench with All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster saying the tourists will use "dual pivots".
Cruden has been absent since sustaining his injury in the first Bledisloe Cup Test against Australia in Sydney, since when Barrett has played an increasingly influential role after returning to action after missing the second Wallabies Test with his own injury concern - a calf problem.
Barrett replaced Dan Carter after 54 minutes of the Test against Argentina in Hamilton then entered the fray after just 15 minutes against South Africa when Carter sustained his shoulder injury in the contact that saw Bismarck du Plessis sent controversially to the sin-bin.
"With the length of time Cruden has been out, if he does get on the field it's probably going to be managed time-wise," Foster told Fairfax Media. "We'll make that call based on how he deals with the training load this week."
Hurricanes playmaker Barrett has looked increasingly at home in the Test arena, with Foster saying: "I thought he played his best test match against South Africa in a very trying situation.
"I know Cruden has come into this campaign really determined to make his mark, and he's played very well. He's very keen to get back out there. Beauden put a bit of a marker out there last week as well. We're pretty happy with that arena."
