The Blues have been dealt a blow with lock Culum Retallick sidelined for six months after going down injured in Super Rugby pre-season training.

Retallick ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a drill this week. After having a scan and consulting a specialist, the 28-year-old is scheduled to undergo surgery next year after the swelling subsides.

Retallick described his misfortune as a cruel blow.

"I was incredibly motivated for a big year with the Blues and had been enjoying a tough pre-season with the guys," he said. "It's a pretty cruel blow to have this happen before the season has even started."

Coach John Kirwan said Retallick would be a big loss and that a decision would be made in the New Year as to whether Retallick could be back in time before the end of the season or would need to be replaced in the squad.
