Richie McCaw has flagged for the first time he might retire after the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England.

The All Blacks captain, who has won 124 Test caps, is out of contract with New Zealand Rugby late next year and says he is "reasonably unlikely" to continue playing in 2016.

"You never know but at the moment just to play next year is not a given any more," McCaw told Fairfax Media. "I haven't even considered beyond [2015] but I would say it is unlikely."

McCaw also reiterated that he was unlikely to play overseas.

"If you have had enough of being bashed up in training and all those things, going over there just to earn some money doesn't really appeal. I would say that is pretty unlikely, too, but, again, you never say never."
