Prop John Schwalger is to miss the rest of the Hurricanes' Super Rugby campaign after developing blood clots in his lungs.

Coach Mark Hammett said the 30-year-old, two-Test All Blacks payer had been battling a chest infection before medical staff identified the problem.

"It's a blow to us, but his health is way more important than any game of footy," Hammett told Fairfax.

The prop, who was scratched from the bench for Friday's 39-20 win against the Blues, will miss the rest of the Super Rugby season but Hammett was hopeful to have him available next year.

The Hurricanes, third in the New Zealand conference, will seek a replacement for Schwalger.
