Benji Marshall's failed flirtation with rugby union may cost him around Aus$2 million (£1.1 million) according to a report in the New Zealand Herald.

It has emerged that Marshall turned down a three-year contract extension worth Aus$1.2 million with Wests Tigers when he switched codes last year as well as a lucrative TV deal with Channel Nine.

His deal at Auckland Blues was estimated to be worth around Aus$1 million over two years with an similar sum expected from commercial agreements.

Reports say he will return to rugby league on a much lower salary for the remainder of the season and any new contract for future years will not approach the sums he would have earned had he remained with Wests Tigers.
