Waikato claimed the New Zealand national sevens title in Rotorua with an emphatic 38-19 win over defending champions Wellington on Sunday. The sides had already faced off earlier in the tournament, with Wellington hammering Waikato 35-5 in their final pool game on Saturday, but Waikato were too good in the decider as they pulled out a huge upset.

Wellington led 12-0 early but Waikato fired back with a 70-metre run from Luke Masirewa that put them back into the match. Masirewa then bagged a second before the half-time break to put Waikato into the lead.

Waikato went again over again early in the second half, and they continued to find the whitewash with Declan O'Donnell and Dylan Collier each bagging a double. Wellington did find the line again with Belgium Tuatagaloa crossing, but it was too little too late with Waikato walking away with the honours.
