Loose forward Michael Leitch has extended his Super Rugby contract at the Chiefs for another season. The Japanese national team captain has been impressive for the Chiefs this year, earning the player-voted rookie of the year award.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie said Leitch had made a huge impact in his debut season. "He is a top man, very professional and has been a real positive influence on our younger players," Rennie said.

The 26-year-old Leitch has played 13 matches this season after making his Super Rugby debut against the Stormers in Cape Town, and said his rugby could only continue to improve at the Chiefs.

"I am surrounded by the best players, coaches and training environment and I want to make the most of the opportunities I have been given," he said.

New Zealand-born Leitch has played 38 matches for Japan, and also captained the Japanese side at the 2008 junior world championship. He plays for the Toshiba Brave Lupus Club in Japan's Top League, and will return to the Chiefs early next year following his Rugby World Cup and Toshiba commitments.
