Towering lock Dominic Bird has turned his back on the Crusaders to sign a two-year deal with the Chiefs.

The 2.06m-tall, two-Test All Black will help the two-time champions recover from the loss overseas of Michael Fitzgerald and Matt Symons. He will partner world player of the year Brodie Retallick in the second row.

"Men of Dominic's dimensions and athleticism are a rarity in our game. That excites us," said coach Dave Rennie.

Bird, 24, said he had enjoyed his three seasons with the Crusaders, but was keen for a new challenge.

"I believe that the Chiefs will provide a great environment where my rugby will continue to develop and my playing opportunities will be enhanced," he said.

His last Test was in November against Scotland but missed selection in the first All Blacks squad of the year.
