The Australian Rugby Union has reportedly been awarded a $1.7 million grant to move its St Leonards-based office to Moore Park from a New South Wales Government fund to build community infrastructure. The grant has also been awarded also to continue the expansion of rugby.

Authorised by NSW Deputy Premier Tony Grant, the grant is more than three times larger than funds given to other projects in the last financial year under the ClubGRANTS scheme, funded by the poker machine profits of the state's largest clubs, Fairfax Media reported.

Mr Grant announced before the 2014-2015 funding round that the maximum payment for each project would be $500,000 to "ensure greater access and reach", but the ARU has been awarded a much more significant grant with the sporting body receiving a supposed maximum $1.67 million under the "Relocation of ARU to Moore Park Precinct and Stronger Regional Communities Initiative".

A spokesman from Mr Grant told Fairfax Media: "This grant supports a sport with over 180,000 participants across NSW and helps promote active and healthy lifestyles through the roll-out of non-contact Sevens."

Fairfax Media reported the ARU would not receive all the funding until it completed the relocation of its offices, and the savings made by the relocation would be used to support community involvement and the Viva7s program. The ARU has established 10 Viva7s centres across regional NSW this year.
