Former All Black Ian Uttley and his wife die in crash
September 18, 2015

Former All Blacks midfielder Ian Uttley and his wife Christine are the couple who were killed in a Hawke's Bay car crash earlier this week. They died shortly before midday on Tuesday after a logging truck and a car crashed at the bottom of Titiokura Hill on State Highway 5 near Te Pohue.

New Zealand Rugby said Uttley, a two-Test centre, was a skilful midfield back from a strong rugby family. He played for three different provincial unions and made his All Blacks debut as a 21-yer-old against England at Eden Park in 1963. His second Test, a week later, was the last time he played for New Zealand.

"It is with sadness that we mark the passing of Ian and Christine Uttley and our thoughts are with their family and friends," said New Zealand Rugby chairman Brent Impey. "I am sure that this week and in coming days Ian will be fondly remembered across New Zealand, in particular by the many rugby communities of which he was a part."
