Bill Williams explains medal gesture

New Zealand centre Sonny Bill Williams declared 15-year-old Charlie Lines "part of the team" after being reunited with the young All Blacks fan he handed his World Cup winner's medal to after Saturday's final against Australia.

Williams placed his medal around the young All Blacks fan's neck shortly after the presentation ceremony at Twickenham, having first helped the boy back to his seat.

Lines then kissed the medal and gave Williams a hug.

Lines had been tackled to the turf by stewards after New Zealand's 34-17 win over the Wallabies as he raced on to the pitch in celebration.

''A young fella came sprinting on and he got smoked by the security guard," the 30-year-old said afterwards. ''It was pretty sad. He's just a young fella obviously caught up in the moment.

''Why not try and make a young fella's night? Hopefully he'll remember it for a while. 'I know he'll appreciate it and when he gets older he'll be telling kids - that's more special than it just hanging on a wall.''

On Sunday, Williams was given a replacement medal at World Rugby's awards ceremony.
