All Blacks lock Brodie Retallick has suffered broken ribs and is expected to miss up to six weeks of Super Rugby with the Chiefs.

Retallick was injured soon after halftime in the Chiefs' 36-32 loss to the Lions in Hamilton on Saturday, leaving the ground in obvious discomfort.

A Chiefs statement says Retallick wasn't considered for their two-match tour to South Africa and Argentina.

He is estimated to return to play in 4-6 weeks.

The Chiefs have otherwise named a squad close to full strength for games against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth and the Jaguares in Buenos Aires.

Winger Shaun Stevenson is unavailable with a shoulder complaint suffered in the opening-round win over the Crusaders while hooker Hika Elliot is still sidelined by concussion symptoms.

Former All Black five-eighth Stephen Donald is yet to play this season but is included in the 27-man tour squad.
