Try feast as Crusaders thrash Bulls
April 28, 2000

The Canterbury Crusaders have returned to the top of the Super 12 table with a crushing 75-27 victory at Jade Stadium tonight.

Crusaders' wingers Caleb Ralph and Marika Vunibaka each scored a hat trick of tries as the Super 12 champions overwhelmed their South African opponents. In all, they scored 11 tries, the others coming from Chris Jack, Justin Marshall, Scott Robertson and Dallas Seymour. In the second half the Bulls came close to a bonus point, scoring three tries through Jaco Van Der Westhuyzen, Henry Pedro and Frikike Welsh.

After a scratchy start, the Crusaders won the match between the 12th and 55th minutes. During that time they scored nine tries as their forwards asserted control, drew in the Bulls' defence and unleashed their backs.

In the second half they fielded all seven substitutes and this may have accounted for the Bulls' spirited comeback.

The Crusaders will be satisfied with the maximum 5 points but will be concerned by the rib injury which forced Andrew Mehrtens to leave the field before half time.
