Walker hat-trick as Brumbies blast Chiefs
April 29, 2000

Brumbies go back to the top of Super 12 after a comfortable 45-17 victory in Hamilton this afternoon.

The match was well balanced at half time, 17-17, but the sin-binning of Chiefs' full back Todd Miller in the first minute of the second half proved decisive. In that time the Brumbies scored two converted tries and effectively won the match.

It took the Brumbies some time to get into their stride and find their rhythm. Their first minute try by Stirling Mortlock was fortuitous, their second by Walker well set up by Larkham. But in the game's second quarter the Chiefs gained control, forcing the Brumbies into uncharacteristic errors and to look rattled. A try by Leaupepe and four penalties from Glen Jackson gave the Chiefs a psychological edge at half time.

This was short-lived, and they did not threaten to score again. Walker completed his hat-trick and livewire hooker Jeremy Paul and Stephen Larkham added further tries. In all, Stirling Mortlock scored twenty points, but the Brumbies will be concerned by the shoulder injury which forced skipper Brett Robinson to leave the field just before half time.
