All Blacks too expensive for Sky
January 15, 2001

New Zealand's Sky TV has withdrawn its bid to broadcast the All Blacks' tour of Argentina, Ireland and Scotland, scheduled for November this year.

Sky withdrew when the price threatened to reach $NZ 1 million per test, and has confirmed that it would not be able to broadcast the tour because of what it considers to be an excessive price.

CEO John Fellet has confirmed that Sky backed away once the bid for the All Blacks' tour, the Six Nations and Europe's Heineken Cup reached $NZ 2.93 million.

Fellet has told Reuters , " We understand the alternate bidder ended up paying $US 1.3 million, about $NZ 3 million, and that's before you send a commentary team, before you worry about getting all the feeds back."

Speculation in New Zealand newspapers over the weekend had identified TelstraSaturn as the altenate bidder , but the company has so far declined to confirm nor deny its interest.
