Solomons' pleasant problem
February 8, 2001

The Stormers may have a problem with their lack of front row resources, but Ulster-bound coach Alan Solomons can't complain about the embarrassment of riches at his disposal in the midfield.

With the likes of Robbie Fleck, De Wet Barry, Marius Joubert, Braam van Straaten, Stuart Abbott and Werner Greeff all fighting it out for two jerseys, it should make for an interesting season for the Stormers' selectors.

Solomons' latest problem is whether he should give the exciting Abbott a run against the Boland Kavaliers in a warm-up match on Friday, or to give the probable pairing of Fleck and Barry more game time together.

"I'm still deciding whether I should give Stuart a run alongside either Robbie or De Wet," he told Die Burger.

"To be fair, I should give Robbie and De Wet the chance to play the whole match together, but it will be interesting to see how Stuart combines with them. If it goes well with the Fleck-Barry combination, I might decide to give Stuart a run."

Meanwhile, Solomons' front row curse took a turn for the worse when Bok forward Robbie Kempson limped out of practice on Wednesday.

The Stormers can ill-afford to lose another prop with Toks van der Linde, Morne van der Merwe and Cobus Visagie all unavailable.

But it seems the problem isn't too bad, though. "Robbie has tendonitis in the hamstring, but should be fit to play against Boland," the coach told the Cape Times.
