Defending champions , Fiji, suffered a stunning loss to the USA, 12-10, in the first round of pool play in Wellington today.

Leading 10-0 at half time , and seeming to be in control, they were overtaken in the second half by a committed and pacy American side. The USA only just squeezed ahead on the stroke of full time but were deserved and popular winners.

Earlier, Argentina were just too good for Wales, winning 21-14, Samoa overwhelmed Papua New Guines 40-5 and then England overpowered but did not completely outclass a China side 33-14
