The 2001 Air New Zealand NPC will have slightly different promotion-relegation rules as it transitions into the new format from 2002 onwards.

NZRFU Chairman Murray McCaw announced in Wellington today that in order to transition to the new format in 2002 the following promotion-relegation mechanisms would be put in place for 2001:

The bottom placed team in division one is automatically relegated to division two.

The second placed team in division one plays a promotion-relegation match against the winner of division two with this match to take place the week following the division finals at the home venue of the division one team.

The bottom two placed teams in division two are automatically relegated to division three.

The winner of division three remains in division three.

Mr McCaw said this would ensure that division one, two and three had 10, 8 and 9 teams respectively for the new format in 2002.

'The NPC is a great competition and while we transition into the new format we should ensure that it continues to have meaningful contests in 2001 for the players and fans,' Mr McCaw said.
