Larkham poised for return
March 13, 2001

It's been said before, but Brumbies flyhalf Stephen Larkham is poised to make his return from injury against the Bulls, in Canberra, on Saturday.

The Wallaby pivot has missed the opening three games of the Super 12 due to a hamstring injury, but Brumbies officials are confident Larkham will return against the Bulls. Larkham was expected to return against the Crusaders two weeks ago and again last weekend against the Cats, but was a late withdrawal on both occasions.

"He's certainly eager to get back, he ran at about 90-95 per cent today so that's a good sign," Brumbies coach Eddie Jones said. "He still has to get through our training tomorrow and on Friday but we are cautiously optimistic."

In a further boost for the Brumbies, utility back Andrew Walker is expected back after returning early from South Africa to be with his ill mother. The major injury concerns for the Brumbies are centre James Holbeck (hamstring) and winger Joel Wilson (calf).

Many are expecting the Bulls to be handed a hiding after their 53-7 loss to the Waratahs in Sydney, but Jones is wary of the side that has won just once away from home in its entire Super 12 history.

"It wasn't indicative of their form over the previous weeks," Jones said. "Against the Hurricanes they were probably a little unlucky to lose in the end ... and Wellington scored most of their tries off Bulls mistakes so those scorelines can be a little misleading."

Jones was upbeat for the remainder of the competition after the IRB agreed to soften its stance on the laws governing the tackle and breakdown.

"The way tackles were being interpreted wasn't in the best interests of rugby and it's pleasing to see that the IRB has admitted their mistake, moved quickly on it and put out what we believe is a very positive action."
