Tune in doubt for semi
May 13, 2001

Wallaby and Reds winger Ben Tune is given only a slim chance playing in Saturday's Super 12 semi-final against the Brumbies in Canberra.

Tune was forced from the field during the first half of Saturday's 25-20 victory against the Waratahs in Sydney with a shoulder injury. Scans revealed no break, but there are fears of a minor tear in the rotator cuff that is likely to force him out of the semi-final.

"We will give him every opportunity, but we are banking on the fact he probably won't be available," Queensland manager Anthony Herbert said.

Tune will go close to the title of the unluckiest player in Australian rugby after another season disrupted by injury. He only recently returned to the field after a knee graze became infected, which prevented him from playing for several rounds.

If Tune is unavailable, the Reds are likely to opt for Junior Pelesasa who replaced Tune on Saturday night and scored a crucial try in the second half.

The Reds were still enjoying their dramatic resurgence on Sunday after falling to 11th spot after seven rounds only to come home with five successive victories to earn a semi-final shot against the Brumbies.

When the two sides met in Round Six in the rain at Ballymore, the Brumbies snuck home 23-15 in a tight struggle.

"We set out to win six games and to get 32 points and got both of those and we set out to get more bonus points than Queensland teams have done in the past and we've done that," Reds coach Mark McBain said. "We've changed the structure, we've changed a lot of things and the players have responded really well."

Brumbies coach Eddie Jones said it was no coincidence that Queensland's revival corresponded with several key players coming into form.

"They are getting the ball to their main ball runners who are all playing exceptionally well and those guys are Toutai Kefu and Daniel Herbert," Jones said. "Queensland are really progressing, they've now won five on the trot, so they are under a fair bit of pressure to keep that winning sequence up."

Brumbies officials were confident that No.8 Jim Williams would recover in time from a rib cartilage injury.
