Lomu stars in Baa-baas romp

The Barbarians romped to a 74-31 victory over a Scotland XV at Murrayfield as a crowd of 28,626 gathered to honour the memory of Gordon Brown.

The late Scotland and Lions lock, universally known as `Broon frae Troon', would surely have revelled in the fast-flowing rugby watched by a crowd of 28,626.

And it was a modern-day superstar who provided most of the thrills, with All Black wing Jonah Lomu charging to four first half tries and handing several other passses away when he had the line at his mercy.

Lomu gave way after 60 minutes to a great ovation from the home crowd, who also enjoyed seeing several youngsters blooded in this non-cap match by Scotland coach Ian McGeechan.

The most notable success was centre Marcus di Rollo who scored the first Scottish try off an interception and throughout showed the creativity so much missing from the Scots' midfield this season.

Another big success was flanker Donny MacFadyen, though the former Scotland Under-21 captain was only on the field because another young hopeful, Andrew Mower, was injured after just 14 minutes.

The crowd was still coming into the stadium when Lomu registered the evening's first score.

And it was classic Lomu, driving up the wing from his own 22 after a Scotland attack had been stopped on the Baabaas' line.

Four minutes later he was at it again, though this time from only 40 metres. And two minutes later right-wing Friedrich Lombard touched down to leave Scotland trailing 15-0.

However, in an amazing turnaround, Scotland led 21-15 by the 18th minute with a huge contribution from youngsters.

First uncapped di Rollo scored off an interception and then sent in Jon Petrie. Then Chris Paterson crossed, with Duncan Hodge converting all three.

This fired up the Baabaas who took their revenge with three tries in six minutes - two more by Lomu and the other from Richard Cockerill courtesy of the New Zealander.

Scotland scored another through James McLaren but the Baabaas immediately replied for a half-time lead of 41-26.

It took only three minutes for the all star Baabaas to score from the restart, through Joost van der Westhuizen, and two in two minutes by Kevin Maggs and Lombard soon followed.

To their credit Scotland were able to put in a sustained period of pressure with MacFadyen's try the reward, but the Baabaas took their try count to 12 with late contributions from Ben Clarke and Pat Lam.
