Griffiths and Hansen set to be Wales coaches
May 26, 2001

Canterbury Crusaders coach Steve Hansen and former Wales rugby league coach Clive Griffiths are set to become Graham Henry's full time Wales assistants.

The Western Mail reported that the Wales Rugby Union have abandoned plans to appoint three full-time assistant coaches to Henry. Instead Cardiff assistant coach Geraint John and District A development officer Leigh Jones are expected to continue as "attached" coaches to the national cause.

However, contractual issues are set delay any immediate plans. Griffiths has a year to run on his contract as Swansea assistant coach while Hansen is unlikely to be free until December. Such a situation would prompt the union to ask Cardiff coach Lynn Howells to continue as forwards coach until Hansen arrives.

Hansen has coached at New Zealand A level and is lined up to succeed Howells as full-time forwards coach. Griffiths is likely to be defence coach.
