The Canterbury and New Zealand Rugby Football Unions have learnt that the Welsh Rugby Union has made an offer to Steve Hansen to be the assistant coach of the Welsh national side, which he has accepted. The position is effective from November 2001.

The Canterbury board met on Tuesday night to discuss Mr Hansen's decision and has accepted his offer to continue in his role as Canterbury head coach for the 2001 Air New Zealand NPC campaign. He has been a crucial member of the Crusaders' coaching staff which won three successive Super 12 titles between 1998-2000.

"Steve had advised us of his future intentions, which we considered carefully," explained Canterbury Chairman Mike Eagle.

"His contribution to Canterbury and Crusader rugby has been significant and we are sad to lose his expertise and passion.

"His commitment and desire for the Canterbury team to perform well in this year's Air New Zealand NPC is unquestionable, and we know he will be motivated to end his time with Canterbury on a high."

Both Canterbury and the NZRFU are disappointed with the actions of the Welsh Rugby Union and are considering their position on this matter further.
