Volcano set to explode in Super 12
June 20, 2001

Reports Down Under suggest that New Zealand and Canberra Raiders league winger Leslie Vainikolo is set to switch codes.

The NZRFU have confirmed that they had been in touch with the player, who starred in last year's world cup held in Britain and France, via his agent.

A massive presence on the field, Vainikolo's performances have drawn comparisons with that other gargantuan Kiwi flyer, Jonah Lomu. He is currently out of action with a chest injury and not expected to play again this season.

He turned down a deal to join Australian Super 12 side ACT Brumbies last season and is thought to be seeking a Super 12 contract in New Zealand.

"Lesley has an option for another year [with the Raiders] but he won't be taking that up," Vainikolo's manager Daryl Mather told the New Zealand Herald. "We have had preliminary discussions with rugby union, but at the moment we have nothing in concrete.

"Once that occurs, I have told Canberra that they will have the last shot to see if they can find any flexibility in their cap to keep him there."
