Injury status after Tri-Nations opener
July 22, 2001

South Africa have had contrasting news on two casualties following Saturday's defeat by New Zealand.

Lock Victor Matfield who was a massive presence for the home side in the line outs should be back for this Saturday's visit of Australia.

The lock was forced from the field after a blow to the head as he was tackling All Black skipper Anton Oliver.

He looked decidedly shaken as he was helped off but concussion, that would mean a mandatory lay off, has not been diagnosed just bad bruising.

However, Marius Joubert was not so lucky after a disappointing first game for the Springboks that was ended after just 19 minutes thanks to a knee injury. He is out for at least three weeks.

Meanwhile it was all good news for the All Blacks as they returned to New Zealand.

Both Jeff Wilson, who was replaced at half time suffering from double vision and a migraine, and Norm Maxwell, suffering from hurt ribs, should be fine for their next Tri Nations clash against Australia in Dunedin on August 11.
