Eales: start of a new era
July 27, 2001

Wallaby captain John Eales Friday issued an ominious warning to the Springboks ahead of their Tri-Nation clash in Pretoria on Saturday when he said that his charges were ushering in a new era under coach Eddie Jones.

"The transition from Rod (Macqueen) to Eddie has been easy," said Eales. "He came in highly respected by the players and we are all very excited."

The fact that the Wallabies are rated top in the world and still searching for more could spell disaster for a Bok team reeling under the pressure of a home loss to the All Blacks in the Tri-Nations opener in Cape Town last week.

"From my point of view the situation in the Bok camp is not even in my consideration at all. They are going to be enormously competitive," said Jones ahead of his first Test match after succeeding Macqueen.

The Wallabies are looking to win successive matches in South Africa for the first time since 1963 after winning 19-18 last season in Durban. "That shows it is very difficult to win in South Africa and we are acutely aware of the significance of a victory but if we play to our ability we have a good chance," said Eales, playing down his team's "favourite" tag.

While Eales said that his team were aware of making history he played down the Wallabies last outing at Loftus where they went down 61-24 - a record defeat.

"That is not even in the back of our minds, what happened then, and even what happened last week is not relevant," said the Australian captain.

Jones said the Wallabies would not specifically target new Bok fullback Conrad Jantjes, despite his inexperience at the highest level. "We've got to kick smart," said Jones, "Jantjes has good running skills so we will kick constructively and not just for the sake of kicking to a new fullback."
