Inquiry after player loses testicle
July 30, 2001

An investigation is underway in New Zealand after an 18-year-old had to have a testicle removed following a club match.

An allegation has been made that the unnamed player from the Pirongia club had his testicles wrenched a squeezed during the game although no incident was reported to officials at the time.

The player was taken to hospital after the game against Otorohanga Kio Kio United on July 20 and had to have a testicle surgically removed.

The Waikato Rugby Union will now look into the incident with criminal charges possible if a perpetrator can be found.

"If it is the result of foul play then we would be concerned that sort of thing went on, particularly as it was at under-19 level and in a night game," Waikato RU's council of clubs chairman John Gillespie said.

NZRFU medic Dr John Mayhew, the All Blacks' doctor, who will receive a report from the Waikato RU, said such injuries are unusual.
