Northland's number twos vie for start

Northland new boys Tim Dow and Derrin Witcombe are battling it out for the hooking role ahead of this weeken's opening NPC clash with Taranaki.

The game is expected to be a ferocious forward battle with both packs boasting formidable reputations and the news for Northland is good from the physio room.

Blindside flank forward Brett Waaka has recovered from injury to secure his place and will partner Graham Hilton-Jones and Tim Henwood in a highly competitive back row unit.

Up front the pack has a familiar look with Glenn Taylor, Vula Maimuri and Tim Knight and Mike Storey all in leaving just then hooking role for coach Bryce Woodward.

He has gone with the experience of Ben Meyer at fly half with the in form Aiden Vince keeping Auckland import James Arlidge on the bench.
