Stats help Aussies keep up

The Australian coaching team believe it has discovered evidence that it has been preparing for an outmoded form of rugby.

With the three nations have managed just the one solitary try in 106 minutes of Tri-Nations so far the Wallaby coaching team have undertaken an in depth statistical analysis of the game.

The results, suspended second row David Giffin has said in his exclusive column for Scrum.com, were amazing and revealed just how the game has been transformed over recent years.

However, he was not prepared to elucidate further for fear of giving away the Australian's tactics ahead of Saturday's crucial Bledisloe Cup clash at Carisbook.

But he said: "The stats that were provided for the team were quite amazing, in that they showed basically that we have been training for an outdated version of the game.

"I would like to be able to tell you a bit more about what was found but I'm not sure that the coaching staff or anyone in Australian rugby would want me sharing any hard earned information.

"Information that I believe has the ability to give the Wallabies an edge over their rivals."

Australia's coach Eddie Jones is thought to be preparing to play two openside flankers, George Smith and Phil Waugh, at some point on Saturday possibly pointing towards what the stats have revealed.

Blindside Owen Finegan could make way at some point for the more mobile Waugh who replaced David Lyons on the bench. Jones has said that what happens in the tackle area could determine the outcome of the game.

He has also sought a meeting with English referee Steve Lander after criticism of Irish official David McHugh following the defeat to South Africa about certain aspects of the game he thought the Australians were unfairly penalised for in Pretoria.

Jonah Lomu, outside centre Tana Umaga, blindside flank forward Reuben Thorne and hooker Anton Oliver are all being targeted in the tackle as New Zealand's main threat with ball in hand.
