Half back poser for Smith
August 21, 2001

With the must-win game against the Springboks at Eden Park just five days away, All Blacks coach Wayne Smith is still uncertain as to who his halfback combination will be.

Incumbents Justin Marshall and Tony Brown both had very poor games in the 23-15 loss to the Wallabies in Dunedin a fortnight ago, meaning Byron Kelleher and Andrew Mehrtens could find themselves in the starting line-up on Saturday.

Smith admitted he was still unsure as to which two will start the game the Kiwis have to win to have a chance of winning the Vodacom Tri-Nations. "I still haven't got my thoughts together on that one," he said on Monday.

"Between the four players you get the best of different worlds if you've got the right combination. But there are so many things I have to contemplate before I decide which of the four will start against South Africa. Luckily, I still have some time."
