Giffin fights for recall
August 22, 2001

Wallaby lock David Giffin is unsure if he will continue to pay for his uncharacteristic lapse in concentration against the Springboks.

Giffin was returns to the Wallaby squad from a two-game suspension as it prepares for the final Tri-Nations clash against the All Blacks at Stadium Australia on September 1. But he is unsure if he will reclaim his starting place in the side.

The Brumbies lock lashed out at Robbie Fleck during the Tri-Nations game against South Africa in Pretoria and was handed the first suspension of his 29-Test career. It also cost him $20,000 in match bonuses.

The dilemma for Wallaby selectors now is whether they immediately return Giffin to the starting side or retain his Brumbies team-mate Justin Harrison. During the Lions series, Giffin was forced to withdraw from the final Test due to injury allowing Harrison to be named man-of-the-match in his Wallaby debut. However, one week later Harrison was dumped from the squad to make way for Giffin on his return from injury.

Selectors must also decide if they return Andrew Walker to the wing or retain Chris Latham after Walker also returned to the squad following his axing for disciplinary reasons.

"The side has been going well so I realise that it's always hard to change that," Giffin told AAP. "Justin has been playing well and I haven't played for a number of weeks.

"It's a decision the selectors have to make and there's not much I can do about it now."
