Jonah signs until World Cup
October 19, 2001

Jonah Lomu has re-signed with the New Zealand Rugby Football Union (NZRFU) until after the 2003 World Cup, extending a two-year contract that would have expired at the end of the year.

NZRFU chief executive David Rutherford said the extension to Lomu's contract was great news for all levels of the game in New Zealand.

"Jonah has made, and will continue to make, a tremendous contribution to the game in New Zealand both on and off the field," said Rutherford.

"Ensuring that Jonah continues to play in New Zealand was of considerable importance to the NZRFU. He's a great player and a huge drawcard where ever he goes."

Lomu's manager Phil Kingsley-Jones was happy with the deal and said Lomu had never intended leaving the country or the All Blacks.

"We just needed to sit down with the NZRFU over the last three months and agree on a deal which was good for Jonah and good for the NZRFU," Kingsley-Jones said.

Lomu, 26, has played 62 games for the All Blacks and played his 50th Test this year against Australia at Carisbrook in Dunedin, New Zealand. - Sapa-AP
