Sexton calls time on his career
October 22, 2001

Canterbury hooker Matt Sexton has announced his retirement from rugby and will play his final game for the Canterbury when their season ends.

That will either come in the semi-final against Auckland next weekend or if Canterbury make it to the finals the following week.

Sexton, speaking in a statement released on Sunday, said: "I've had a fantastic time playing rugby for Canterbury and now it's time for me to concentrate on other challenges in my life."

The 31-year-old begins a new job as the manager of elite athletes for the New Zealand Academy of Sport as soon as the NPC season finishes.

Sexton played 125 matches for Canterbury and scored 11 tries, while he played 36 times and scored one try for Super 12 side Crusaders.

Canterbury Rugby Union CEO Steve Tew gave Sexton his blessing, telling nzrfu.com: "He's been a huge contributor on and off the field, from the amateur days right through to the era of professionalism,"

Meanwhile, All Black lock Norm Maxwell has confirmed he has signed to play for Canterbury for another two years.
