Canterbury cruise into final

Canterbury swept Auckland aside 48-15 to secure a place in this year's NPC final.

Canterbury dominated thoughout and Auckland never threatened toupset the odds and progress to the final.

Auckland had no answers yesterday in a match effectively decided by halftime, when the Cantabs held 24-3 advantage.

Andrew Mehrtens kicked the home side to a 9-3 lead, then All Black-in-waiting Nathan Mauger opened Canterbury's try account on the 25-minute mark. Soon after Caleb Ralph crossed for their second.

Shortly after the break thegame was over as a contest as the hugely talented McCaw raced over, soon followed by a score form Joe Maddock that made it 36-3.

Auckland struck back with tries from Doug Howlett and Steve Devine but it only spurred the Cantabs on.

Justin Marshall went over for a try as did Greg Feek to restore the advantage. Auckland midfielder Iliesa Tanivula scampered away for a try before Ralph had his second to complete proceedings.
