Extra time try robs Pumas of historic victory
December 2, 2001

Argentina came within a gnat's whisker of conquering the All Blacks for the first time.

Only a try deep inside injury time got New Zealand off the hook 24-20, Scott Robertson going over after two Lisandro Arbizu tries had looked set to give the Pumas a historic victory.

Andrew Mehrtens had kicked four penalties and a conversion while Jonah Lomu also crashed over for a typical first-half try in the first-half.

But Argentina had played with immenase spirit, going in leading 10-8 at the break and a second try from Arbizu and the trusty boot of Felipe Contepomi taking them into added time with their noses in front 20-17.

However Robertson's heroics after four minutes of stoppage time spared the All Blacks their blushes.
