Slater appointed Hurricanes skipper
January 14, 2002

Gordon Slater has once again been appointed as captain of the Hurricanes retaining the position he held last year.

"Gordon performed well as captain last year and his leadership qualities grew throughout the season," commented Hurricanes coach Graham Mourie.

"He is now very comfortable in the role and has the benefit of being able to call on his experiences from last year.

Tana Umaga heads a group of senior players that have been given additional leadership functions in order to assist Slater in his capacity.

"Tana performed well as the Wellington Lions' captain last year and he will have some specific areas of responsibility this season for the Hurricanes.

"We feel the team's leadership will work well with Gordon as captain and Tana supporting him," said Mourie.
