JP Pietersen is a South African World Cup winner who was also a part of the Springboks side that won the series against the British & Irish Lions in 2009. His best position is wing due to his pace, deception and unpredictability although he can play at fullback but is sometimes susceptible to dropping high balls. His parents gave him the initials JPR after the great Welsh fullback JPR Williams.
His performances for the Sharks earned him a call-up to the South African Test side in 2006 when he made his debut against Australia in a 24-16 Tri-Nations win in Johannesburg. The following year he was the leading try-scorer in the Tri-Nations scoring 11 tries from 13 matches and earned selection for the World Cup where he scored four tries on the way to the final. Pietersen played on the wing in the final against England as the Springboks won 15-6 at the Stade de France in Paris.
Two years later Pietersen ended a spell of seven games without a try for his country when he went through untouched to score against the British & Irish Lions in the second Test of the series. The Springboks had won a lineout and once Pietersen received the ball he ghosted into space sprinting past Luke Fitzgerald to score. The try came as the Springboks trailed 10-0 and they went onto win a thrilling encounter 28-25 at the Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria to win the series.
Pietersen pushed on for the national side over the next couple of years and looks to be a hugely important player going into the 2011 World Cup.
