Blues boss Pat Lam has confirmed that fly-half Stephen Brett will play for the franchise in next year's inaugural Super Rugby campaign.

Brett is currently representing Canterbury in the ITM Cup, having made the switch to the Blues in last season's Super 14 draft after several seasons spent as back-up to Dan Carter at the Crusaders.

The playmaker has designs on a place in the All Blacks' squad for next year's Rugby World Cup and has predictably opted for the increased game-time offered by the Blues.

"I can guarantee now that Steve will be playing for the Blues in the first season of Super Rugby," Lam told Radio Sport. "We had him for two year deal with an option after the first year. He thoroughly enjoyed himself and he signed for the second year.

"There are always offers for these guys...that's no secret. The thing that holds them there is the All Blacks jersey and family. Steve is no different to anyone - they realise their career is only for a short period of time.

"With all this speculation he said to me, 'coach I will be here for you next year'. I'm planning with security that I have a quality first five there. The hope is that he plays so well and makes the World Cup team and then he is here for the following year."
