Sonny Bill Williams is unconcerned by his relegation to the Canterbury bench, claiming it's the All Blacks coaches he needs to impress, not his ITM Cup mentors.

Williams has been dropped to the replacements to make way for the returning Ryan Crotty for Saturday's highly anticipated battle with Wellington.

It's thought Canterbury coach Rob Penney could be unhappy with some of Williams' basic skill executions during his last two starts for the club during Crotty's absence through injury, although the centre revealed he hasn't received an explanation for his surprising axing.

The former rugby league international has certainly dazzled in patches, setting up a number of tries and scoring his own as he pushes for an All Blacks berth ahead of the end-of-year tour and next year's World Cup.

"Obviously the coaches at Canterbury aren't the coaches at the top level," Williams told the Press. "Probably everyone has got their own things that they want me to improve on and things like that. I have just got to keep working on getting the little things right and I will be happy with myself. I am happy when I look in the mirror with the things I have done so far, so I have just got to keep on trucking.

On being dropped, Williams said he was "disappointed" but that he could only guess as to the reasons why.

"I don't know, I'm not too sure eh? It is my second full season in rugby and I have got little things to pick up, probably, in the field. It is not all instinct at the moment but, you know, myself personally I don't think I am going too bad. I am pretty confident if I get put out there I can do the job."
