Profile

Rory Lawson made his Scotland debut against Australia in November 2006, following his father Alan into the Scotland scrum-half jersey.

He made his Six Nations debut against England at Twickenham in 2007, and secured his first international start against France on the final day of the tournament. He was included in the Scotland squad for the 2007 World Cup, and played in games against Portugal and New Zealand during the tournament.

Lawson skippered Scotland 'A' in 2006 and 2007 before returning to full international action against England at Murrayfield in March 2008. He made further appearances against Argentina in the summer of 2008 before coming on as a replacement in all three of Scotland's autumn internationals.

Lawson made just two appearances for Scotland in 2009 but his impressive form saw him increasingly challenge Mike Blair and Chris Cusiter at international level. He was a central figure throughout 2011, including the Rugby World Cup, during which time he led his country on five occasions but injury would sideline him for the following year's Six Nations.

He would return to the Scotland set-up at the end of the year and made his 31st Test appearance against Tonga but it would prove to be his last with a wrist injury forcing him to retire ahead of the 2013-14 season.

The grandson of legendary commentator Bill McLaren, Lawson began his club career with Edinburgh in 2003 but would make the switch to English side Gloucester three years later and would help them to the Anglo-Welsh Cup and into the Premiership play-offs. He moved to Championship side Newcastle Falcons for the 2012-13 season and helped them win the title and return to English rugby's top flight.
