Widely regarded as one of the most visionary coaches in the global game, Ashton began his playing career with Tyldesley before moving onto Fylde, Orrell, French club Montferrand and then Italian sides Roma and Milan.
He then switched to coaching and had a brief spell back at Fylde whilst juggling teaching commitments before a re-location saw him link up with Bath. He later moved onto the international stage with Ireland (1996-8) and then served as an assistant to England coach under Sir Clive Woodward from 1998-2003 when he set up the England Rugby National Academy. He then had a short stint back at Bath before becoming England head coach in 2006 and he went on to steer the side to the 2007 Rugby World Cup Final.
He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2008 New Year Honours and also served as director of coaching at the University of Bath. He rejoined Fylde as a coaching consultant in 2010.
In April 2011 he announced that he would continue at Flyde after rejecting several offers to return to coaching in the Aviva Premiership.
