Former All Blacks prop Greg Somerville is in the mix to be the Melbourne Rebels' new forwards coach.

Mark Bakewell, the man who took charge of the forwards during their maiden Super Rugby season, has left the franchise with immediate effect in order to take up a new position in Sydney as director of rugby at the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club.

Somerville played for the Rebels in their debut season in Super Rugby and his playing swansong came on the Rebels' recent tour of Europe but he has remained in Melbourne after hanging up his boots.

Other options for the Rebels reportedly include former Wallabies forward Matt Cockbain and Ben Darwin who are already part of the franchise's backroom staff. Whoever takes the post will work alongside former Wallabies defence coach and league international John Muggleton who has recently joined the team.
