Exciting midfield back Malakai Fekitoa has signed a new two-year deal with New Zealand Rugby.

The 22-year-old, who made his debut for the All Blacks last year after a standout Super Rugby season for the Highlanders, has agreed a contract keeping him in New Zealand until the end of 2017.

"I'm so grateful that I've been given the opportunity to re-sign with the Highlanders and New Zealand Rugby," he said. "I'm really excited to learn and play as much rugby as I can to become a better rugby player. I know opportunities like this don't come around very often so I'm very grateful and ready for the challenge," he said.

Fekitoa played eight Tests for the All Blacks in 2014 and looms as a long-term replacement in the midfield with veterans Ma'a Nonu and Conrad Smith heading to French clubs after the World Cup. He was off contract at the end of the World Cup.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said it was pleasing for a young player like Fekitoa to remain in the country. "He made an impressive start to his international career last year and we look forward to watching him develop further this year," Hansen said.
