Fergie was interested in 2012 coaching role

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed he was in contention to manage the Team GB football team at London 2012 next summer.

Great Britain will field a men's team in the Olympics for the first time since the Rome Games of 1960, and Ferguson has suggested he spoke with LOCOG chairman Sebastian Coe about overseeing the side.

However, due to Ferguson's commitments with Premier League champions United, the Scot ruled himself out of contention, with England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce this week announced as the men's team head coach.

Ferguson told the Sunday Mirror: "I told Seb that if I wasn't managing at the time I might consider it. But I am managing. I'm busy here at Manchester United."
