World indoor triple jump champion Teddy Tamgho has been banned for 12 months after fighting with a female athlete, although the Frenchman will be eligible to compete at London 2012 having had half his sentence suspended.

Tamgho, expected to be one of Briton Phillips Idowu's main rivals at next summer's Olympics, was involved in an altercation with an unnamed female athlete at a training camp in southern France in October.

A spokesman for the French federation said: "He is suspended for 12 months as of November, six of them suspended. He has also been handed a fine of €1,500 [£1,250] and 50 hours of community service. He expressed his regrets and acknowleges the verdict."

The 22-year-old, who claimed gold at the 2010 World Indoor Championships with a new world record of 17.90m, is banned until May 18 - rendering him unable to defend his world title in Istanbul, which hosts the event in March.
