Kelly Sotherton's hopes of qualifying for London 2012 suffered a major setback when she was forced to withdraw from her first heptathlon since 2008.

Sotherton, who is looking to hit the Olympic qualifying mark of 6150 points at the World Combined Events Challenge in Italy this weekend, pulled up injured in the 200m.

The Athens bronze medallist was in fifth place after three events with 2589 points, having run 13.96 seconds in the 100m hurdles, clearing 1.72m in the high jump and throwing 12.98m in the shot put.

But she failed to finish the fourth and final event of the opening day as compatriot Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who is one of her rivals for one of three places in Team GB's Olympic squad, leads the competition after four events.

Johnson-Thompson's total of 3662 leaves her 66 points ahead of Brazil's Lucimara da Sila, with fellow Briton Louise Wood in fifth.
