Paul Scholes has admitted to his surprise at David Beckham's omission from Great Britain's side for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Beckham, 37, was not, as expected, chosen as one of coach Stuart Pearce's three over-age players in the squad, with Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards instead called upon.

The LA Galaxy midfielder played a role in London's successful bid for the Games, and it had subsequently been anticipated he would represent Team GB this summer.

Scholes feels for his former Manchester United team-mate Beckham, saying: "It's a shame about Becks. It's surprising as well, after everything David did to help London get the Olympics.

"That's Stuart Pearce's decision, but I feel sorry for David as I'm sure he'd have loved to have played in it."
